I spent much of my working life investigating child abuse. This, it seems to me, is as bad as anything. But to challenge it, because it's part of 'religion' is or seems to be unacceptable in most societies.
Do you wonder why I count most religions as 'evil'?

I really don't care what people choose to believe, their choice. What really winds me up is the damage done to people in the name of religion. And the fact that there is so much pressure NOT to criticise 'religion' as if it was off-limits.
Well, it isn't, and I for one will criticise and make comments where I think it's due.

On an entirely different MB, someone just raised the issue of FGM. Horrific. MGM is no less evil, I suggest.
By coincidence, I happened to watch a youtube Christopher Hitchens debate and this - poorly summarised - is what he said.

We (humans, I mean) have a vehicle on Mars and yet this barbaric practice in the name(s) of discredited supernatural beings continues?

just give up the job, the house and go somewhere where life moves at a slower pace and there are not as many electronic intrusions?
only thing to get to a place like that costs money.. if i had my way, give all of this up for a quiet life on a little small holding that can look after my needs..

Yes I did want to run away. And I did, and perhaps I'm running away still.
I live in one of the most beautiful areas of the world (Pembrokeshire, Wales).
I stay here because I have children and grand-children that mean the world to me.
BUT - there are places I could go where may be I'd be happier. Who knows?

Perhaps here, of all places, we shouldn't forget what their faith means to some people.
until recently, i had never encountered this word "believers" used as it is being used on this board, to describe pejoratively a group of people.
it's not clear to me whether they scorn all who have a faith of some sort.
do they include buddhists, hindus, followers of the baha'i faith, followers of the cargo cult, native americans along with christians, or is it just christians who are honoured with this epithet?.
Just for clarification, I am 'atheist' in that I do not believe in the existence of any gods or supernatural beings. Simple as that.
